'Do you bite your thumb at me sir?' Act 1, Scene 1 Romeo and Juliet
In this dynamic stage combat course, students will dive into iconic scenes from Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. Young performers will work with fight director and actor Tim Dashwood and learn the foundations of safe, believable stage combat while developing character, teamwork, and text interpretation.
Whether it’s a street brawl between the Montagues and Capulets or a high-stakes confrontation, this course combines action and acting for a thrilling theatrical experience!
Course Components
- Learn the fundamentals of safe and effective stage combat techniques.
- Develop physical coordination, control, and spatial awareness in performance.
- Explore Shakespearean text through movement and dramatic action.
- Rehearse and perform choreographed fight scenes from Romeo & Juliet.
- Build confidence in ensemble work and scene partnerships.
- Understand how to tell a compelling story through physicality and character choices.
Meet Tim Dashwood:
Tim is an actor, Fight Director and movement creative having studied extensively in a range of martial and movement practices. He is the current President of the Society of Australian Fight Directors incorporated (SAFDi).
As Fight Director, he works with companies including: Hayes Theatre Company, Sydney Theatre Company, Griffin, The Ensemble, ATYP, Opera Australia, Belvoir, shake & stir theatre co. and Bell Shakespeare. Recent credits include: Primary Trust, Ulster American, Alone It Stands (The Ensemble), Hamlet, West Side Story, Miss Saigon (Opera Australia), Picnic at Hanging Rock, Sweat, Stolen (STC), Pirates of Penzance or the Slave of Duty, Zombie! The Musical, Dubbo Championship Wrestling (Hayes), Nucleus, The Lewis Trilogy, Jailbaby (Griffin).
As an actor, he has starred alongside Jerry Hall in The Graduate (Kay & McLean Productions), played the lead role in David Williamson’s Managing Carmen (QTC) and toured Australia multiple times.
Committed to helping educate the industry, Tim teaches for: Actors Centre Australia, Sydney Actors School and NIDA as well as workshops for the SAFDi.
